Tim Walsh, owner of The Avenue, is no stranger to the D.C. culinary scene.  He has been serving and bartending in the area since the 1990s. He bought his first establishment in Adams Morgan with seed money he received for appearing on MTV’s The Joe Schmo Show.  He has moved a little closer to Maryland and refined his restaurant savvy with his newest undertaking.

As the population in Chevy Chase fluxuates – with younger working professionals in the apartment complexes to the South, and families in the homes off Connecticut Avenue – The Avenue endeavours to be everyone’s go to restaurant. Tim has a knack for identifying a neighborhood’s needs and providing for it.  Chevy Chase once lacked a quintessential neighborhood bar, but now The Avenue is the ideal neighborhood bar/restaurant.

The first floor is washed in natural light from the huge windows in the front.  The exposed brick walls and minimalist decorations make patrons feel comfortable and welcomed.  The downstairs bar, nicknamed the Reagle Beagle, feels like a speakeasy with brick walls and a dimmer lighting scheme than upstairs.  It is the premiere space to watch anything on TV, from sporting events to Bill Murray movies. The Avenue will host Murray Mondays and will be showing a different Bill Murray movie every Monday.  The upstairs is a large dining area used as overflow dining and a large private event space. It boasts a expansive, open space, service bar, and Monopoly game for guest’s convenience and enjoyment.  When the weather is nice there is a large patio for guests. It seats up to thirty people so there is little fear of being stuck indoors when you want to be outside.

Not to be outdone by the decor, the food and beverage list is just as warm and inviting.  The food is classic American fare done just right. The cocktails are classic and done well.  This bar knows that it only takes one good liquor to make a good cocktail so they keep the selection simple  The kids menu boasts the usual fare: mac and cheese or chicken tenders, but also shrimp and steak tips.

The Avenue strives to be a place that everyone can enjoy.  From the menu, to the aesthetics of the dining areas, they have thought about all their potential patrons.  The restaurant is family friendly and offers food and beverage options for kids. It is also bar and has a carefully curated 21+ menu.  There are TVs and entertainment for all ages built into the space. The staff are friendly familiar faces. They are your neighbors and your neighborhood bar.
