Black History Month began as an educational movement to highlight the stories, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans that were often left out of traditional history books. What started as Negro History Week in higher education grew into a nationally recognized month in 1976, officially acknowledged by President Gerald Ford during the U.S. Bicentennial.

Today, Black History Month is celebrated across schools, workplaces, and communities as a time to reflect, learn, and honor Black excellence in history, culture, and innovation. At Mangia DC, we embrace this legacy by offering immersive experiences that combine education, culture, and connection — bringing teams together in meaningful and memorable ways.

Five Valentine’s Experiences to Celebrate the Season

1. Soul Food Cooking Classes – Experience the comfort, history, and flavor of classic soul food dishes in this hands-on culinary experience. Led by a professional chef, teams will learn the roots of soul food while preparing beloved favorites like shrimp and grits, crispy fried okra, and creamy Southern mac & cheese. This experience celebrates tradition, storytelling, and togetherness — one delicious dish at a time.

2. African Art Inspired Paint & Sip – Unleash creativity while exploring the powerful role art has played in Black history and self-expression. Guided by a seasoned art instructor, participants will create African-inspired artwork while learning how visual art became an essential cultural voice throughout history. No experience needed — just paint, sip, and connect.

3. Black-Owned Businesses: Flavors of DC – Celebrate Black entrepreneurship through food with this immersive tasting experience. Guests enjoy a curated selection of dishes from local Black-owned eateries while learning about their stories, impact, and influence on DC’s culinary landscape. Perfect for large groups, this event blends community, culture, and flavor in a festival-style setting.

4. Mixology Class Experience – Inspired by Tom Bullock — the first African American to publish a cocktail book — this interactive mixology class highlights Black contributions to cocktail culture. Participants learn to craft classic and modern drinks (with non-alcoholic options available) while uncovering the history behind the recipes. A spirited way to learn, connect, and toast to legacy.

5. Lend a Hand for Good – Honor Black History Month through service and impact. In this meaningful team experience, participants assemble 3D-printed prosthetic hands for children in need around the world. Guided by an expert facilitator, teams come together to create something that truly changes lives — reinforcing compassion, collaboration, and community.

Black History Month is more than a moment on the calendar — it’s an opportunity to learn, reflect, and come together through shared experiences. By exploring history through food, art, culture, and service, teams can build stronger connections while honoring the legacy and lasting contributions of Black individuals throughout history.

Join Mangia DC this February to celebrate Black History Month in a way that is engaging, educational, and impactful. Whether you’re cooking, creating, tasting, or giving back, each experience is designed to inspire meaningful conversations and lasting memories.
